Burgundy Dresses for Parties, Weddings & Nights Out
Burgundy is one of those colors that makes a dress look instantly more dressed up.
It’s darker than red, warmer than black and especially good once party season starts. A fitted burgundy mini works for a night out, a satin midi is an easy wedding guest dress, and a long burgundy dress can look amazing for a formal event.
And you don’t need to do much with it.
Good shoes, simple jewelry and the right bag are usually enough.
Which Burgundy Dress Should You Choose?
Start with where you’re going.
For parties and nights out, I’d choose a burgundy mini dress, corset dress or something fitted. Burgundy works really well with bodycon shapes because the darker color keeps the look from feeling too much.
For weddings or dinners, a burgundy midi dress is probably the easiest option. Satin is especially good for evening, while a softer fabric works well for daytime weddings.
For formal events, go longer. A burgundy maxi dress in satin or velvet doesn’t need many accessories to look dressed up.
What to Wear With a Burgundy Dress for a Party
For a party, gold is probably my first choice.
A burgundy mini with gold heels or sandals and simple earrings is an easy outfit that doesn’t need much else.
Black works too, especially for a night out. Black heels and a small black bag make burgundy feel a little sharper.
If your dress already has a corset top, cutouts, ruching or an open back, I’d keep the accessories simple.
The dress is already doing enough.
Can You Wear a Burgundy Dress to a Wedding?
Definitely.
A burgundy wedding guest dress is especially good for autumn and winter weddings, but you can wear the color year-round if the fabric suits the season.
For a daytime wedding, I’d choose a midi or flowing maxi with nude, champagne or gold shoes.
For an evening wedding, satin or velvet works really well. Add earrings, a small bag and heels and you’re basically done.
If it’s black tie, go for a burgundy maxi or a more formal midi. For cocktail attire, a fitted midi or dressier mini can work.
Burgundy is already a strong color, so there’s no reason to pile on accessories.
How to Style a Burgundy Dress for a Night Out
This is where I’d go a little darker.
A fitted burgundy mini dress with black heels and a small shoulder bag is hard to get wrong.
In colder weather, add sheer black tights, boots or a leather jacket.
If black feels too obvious, chocolate brown looks surprisingly good with burgundy. A brown bag or heels make the outfit softer while still keeping everything dark and warm.
For something dressier, switch to gold accessories.
What Shoes Go With a Burgundy Dress?
You have plenty of options.
Gold heels are great for parties and weddings. They bring out the warmth in burgundy and look especially good with satin.
Nude heels are softer and work well for daytime events.
Black heels are my choice for nights out or when I want the outfit to feel a little less romantic.
You can also try chocolate brown, deep burgundy or metallic sandals.
I wouldn’t spend too much time trying to match the exact shade of your dress. It usually looks better when everything isn’t perfectly matched anyway.
Gold or Silver Jewelry With Burgundy?
I’d usually choose gold.
Burgundy has warm red tones, so gold jewelry is an easy match.
But silver can look really good with a cleaner, more modern dress. If your bag or shoes are silver, I’d continue with silver jewelry rather than adding gold just because someone says burgundy “needs” it.
And if the dress has a dramatic neckline, you may not need a necklace at all.
Good earrings can be enough.
What Colors Go With a Burgundy Dress?
The easiest colors are black, gold, nude, cream and chocolate brown.
For weddings, champagne and nude keep the outfit softer.
For parties, black and gold are easy.
For autumn and winter, I really like burgundy with chocolate brown or camel.
You can also wear burgundy with burgundy. A slightly darker bag or shoe can look great — just don’t drive yourself mad trying to find exactly the same shade.
Is Burgundy Only for Fall and Winter?
No, although this is definitely when burgundy has its moment.
Velvet, long sleeves and deeper burgundy shades are perfect for autumn and winter parties. It’s also one of the easiest colors to wear for Christmas dinners and holiday events without actually wearing Christmas red.
But a lighter satin burgundy dress can work for spring weddings, dinners and summer evenings too.
As with brown, the fabric matters more than the season.
So, How Would I Wear a Burgundy Dress?
For a party, I’d choose a fitted burgundy mini with gold or black heels.
For a wedding, a satin midi with simple earrings and a small bag.
For a formal evening, a burgundy maxi and not much else.
That’s really the appeal of burgundy dresses. The color already makes the outfit interesting, so you don’t have to spend an hour figuring out what to add.
Then try not to ruin a good thing by adding six accessories.
With love,
Anna
