Holiday party season is the perfect excuse to wear something a little more special. Velvet, sequins, satin, rich colors and beautiful fitted silhouettes all feel right this time of year.
But the best holiday party dress is still the one that fits the occasion — and that you can actually enjoy wearing all evening.
What to Wear to a Holiday Party
Start with where you’re going.
For a formal holiday event, I’d choose a maxi dress or evening gown in velvet, satin or another elegant fabric.
For a cocktail party, a midi dress is an easy choice. It feels dressed up without being too formal.
For a Christmas party or night out, this is where you can have more fun with a mini dress, corset silhouette, sequins or a dramatic neckline.
And for a work holiday party, I’d keep things slightly more polished. A velvet midi, elegant cocktail dress or long-sleeve style works beautifully.

The Best Colors for Holiday Party Dresses
You definitely don’t have to wear red just because it’s Christmas.
I love burgundy, emerald green, black, chocolate brown, navy and deep red for holiday parties. Velvet makes these colors look especially rich.
If you want something brighter, silver and gold are perfect once the season gets closer to New Year’s Eve.
A black holiday party dress is also hard to get wrong. With a beautiful fit and the right accessories, black can look just as special as sequins.
Velvet, Satin or Sequins?
This depends on the kind of night you’re dressing for.
Velvet dresses feel rich and elegant. I’d choose velvet for Christmas dinners, winter weddings and more formal holiday parties.
Satin dresses feel softer and lighter, especially in a midi or maxi silhouette.
Sequin dresses are made for parties. Christmas and New Year’s Eve are exactly when I’d wear them.
My rule is simple: if the fabric is already making the statement, everything else can be quieter.

What to Wear to a Work Christmas Party
A work Christmas party dress can still be fitted and feminine. It just needs a little balance.
I’d choose a midi dress, velvet style, elegant long-sleeve dress or structured cocktail dress in black, burgundy, emerald or navy.
If the dress is very fitted, keep the neckline simpler. If you’re showing more leg, I’d probably choose more coverage on top.

A red Christmas party dress is always going to work. Emerald velvet is another favorite, while black is perfect if you want something less obviously festive.

Once Christmas is over, the mood changes.
For New Year’s Eve dresses, I’d bring out silver, gold, sequins, metallic fabrics and more dramatic silhouettes.
A silver sequin mini, fitted black dress or metallic maxi can all work. Just don’t make every part of the outfit compete for attention.
How to Style a Holiday Party Dress
Don’t overthink it.
A statement dress usually needs only good heels, earrings and a small evening bag.
If you’re wearing sequins, keep the jewelry simple. If your dress has a dramatic neckline, skip the necklace. And if you’re going to be standing and dancing for hours, wear heels you can actually walk in.
