What to Wear to a Birthday Dinner: Dress Ideas for Women

A birthday dinner is the perfect excuse to wear the dress you’ve been saving for a special occasion.

But what to wear to a birthday dinner really depends on where you’re going. A rooftop restaurant, romantic dinner and night out with friends can all call for completely different looks.

My rule is simple: choose one thing you want to show off — the silhouette, color, neckline or legs — and build the rest of the outfit around it.

What to Wear to a Dressy Birthday Dinner

For an elegant restaurant, I love a midi dress, corset dress or fitted maxi.

A sculpted waist or beautiful neckline makes the outfit feel special without needing too many accessories. Satin works beautifully for a softer look, while a fitted bandage or corset silhouette gives you more structure.

Black is always an easy choice, but burgundy, chocolate brown, red and deep green look especially beautiful for evening dinners.

Birthday Dinner Outfits for a Night Out

If dinner is followed by cocktails or dancing, this is where I’d wear the mini.

A fitted birthday mini dress with an asymmetric neckline, open back or corset bodice already has enough personality. Add heels, a small bag and simple jewelry.

And don’t be afraid of color. Your birthday is one of those occasions when a red, pink or statement dress doesn’t need an explanation.

Corset or Bandage Dress for a Birthday?

Both are great birthday options, but they give you a different look.

A corset dress defines the waist and usually creates a more structured, feminine silhouette.

A bandage dress gives you that fitted, sculpted look from top to bottom. I particularly like bandage dresses for evening birthday dinners and cocktail bars because they need very little styling.

With either one, make sure you can comfortably sit down in it. You’ll be having dinner, after all.

What Color Should You Wear for Your Birthday Dinner?

Whatever makes you feel good.

Red feels confident and immediately gets attention.

Black is sexy, elegant and incredibly easy to style.

Pink gives you a softer, more feminine birthday look.

Burgundy and chocolate brown are beautiful for fall and winter birthdays.

And if you love sparkle, silver, gold or sequins are completely appropriate. It’s your birthday — this is not the night I’d tell you to tone it down.

Don’t make every part of the outfit the statement.

If you’re wearing a dramatic corset or bright red mini, simple heels and earrings are enough.

If the dress is black and minimal, then I’d bring in a statement bag, earrings or a stronger shoe.

And wear shoes you can actually walk in. Dinner has a habit of turning into drinks somewhere else.

Most Importantly, Wear Something That Feels Like You

Some women feel incredible in a tiny corset mini. Others want a fitted midi or a long dress that moves beautifully when they walk into the restaurant.

Neither is more glamorous than the other.

The best birthday dinner outfit is the one that makes you stop thinking about what you’re wearing once the night begins.

With love,
Anna
