Velvet Dresses for Women: How to Wear Them

###Velvet Dresses for Women: How to Wear Them

I have a soft spot for velvet dresses. There’s something about velvet that makes even a simple dress feel more special — especially once the weather gets cooler and evening plans start filling the calendar.

But velvet can also be easy to overdo. The fabric already has texture and catches the light, so the best velvet dresses for women are usually the ones with a beautiful shape and just a few thoughtful details.

Here’s how I would choose and style one.

When to Wear a Velvet Dress

Velvet really comes into its own in fall and winter.

It’s perfect for Christmas parties, winter weddings, birthday dinners, cocktail parties and New Year’s Eve. A velvet dress can also work beautifully for a date night when you want something a little more dressed up without wearing a full evening gown.

For daytime summer events, I would usually choose something lighter. Velvet looks its best when the setting matches the richness of the fabric.

Mini, Midi or Maxi?

This depends entirely on where you’re going.

A velvet mini dress is fun for birthdays, parties and nights out. I particularly like minis with long sleeves or a higher neckline because the proportions feel balanced.

A velvet midi dress is probably the easiest to wear. It works for cocktail parties, dinners and many weddings without feeling either too casual or too formal.

For a formal winter wedding or evening event, a velvet maxi dress can look incredible. I’d look for a clean silhouette with one beautiful detail — an open back, side slit or off-the-shoulder neckline.

The Best Colors for Velvet Dresses

This is one of the reasons I love velvet: color looks completely different in this fabric.

Black velvet is timeless and probably the easiest to wear.

For fall and winter, I love burgundy, wine red, chocolate brown, emerald and navy. They look rich without needing sequins or heavy embellishment.

And if you’re shopping for a holiday party, deep red and emerald velvet are hard to beat.

How to Style a Velvet Dress

My rule with velvet is simple: don’t compete with the dress.

If the neckline is already dramatic, skip the necklace and wear earrings instead. If the dress is fitted or has a slit, keep the shoes elegant and simple.

Gold jewelry looks beautiful with burgundy, brown, red and green velvet. Silver works particularly well with black, navy and cooler shades.

For shoes, I’d choose a pointed pump or a simple strappy heel. Add a small clutch and you’re basically done.

You really don’t need sequins, statement shoes, oversized jewelry and velvet all in the same outfit.

Velvet Dresses for Weddings

A velvet wedding guest dress is especially beautiful for a fall or winter wedding.

For an evening wedding, I’d choose a midi or maxi in burgundy, emerald, navy, plum or black. An off-the-shoulder neckline, soft draping or a side slit gives velvet a more modern feel.

Velvet Dresses for Christmas Parties

This is probably velvet’s best season.

A velvet Christmas party dress feels festive without requiring head-to-toe sparkle. Red and emerald are obvious holiday choices, but I actually love black or burgundy velvet when you want something a little less predictable.

One Thing I Always Check Before Buying Velvet

The fit.

Velvet is beautiful, but if a fitted dress is too tight, you will see pulling around the seams and spend the evening adjusting it.

Check whether the fabric has stretch, especially with a bodycon or corset silhouette. Sit down in it. Walk around. Raise your arms.

If you can’t comfortably have dinner and dance in it, it’s not the right dress.

Find Your Velvet Dress

A good velvet dress doesn’t need much styling. The fabric already brings the color, texture and evening feel.

Choose the length for the occasion, find a color you love and let the dress do the rest.
